You don't really understand Cancer until someone close to you is diagnosed with one. I really hope, wish and pray nobody goes through this pain however there are still lakhs who are fighting it. One form of cancer is Leukaemia, also called Leukemia.
More than 3 lakh people in India suffer from these diseases! Many.. don’t survive.
85% of cancer patients in Luekaemia fail to respond to Chemotherapy. Howver, there is a silver lining to this cloud. Stem cells transplant (also known as Bone marrow transplant) increases the chances of cure for these patients by upto 80%!
What are Stem cells?
Stem cells are body’s master cells. They have the ability to grow into any of the body’s more than 200 cell types. Maximum cells are found in the bone marrow (spongy substance in the bone),
When bone marrow derived stem cells from a donor with the same tissue type are transfused into the patient’s body, they replace the diseased or damaged cells.
The Problem:
No two people have the (except twins) have identical tissue types. Siblings have a 25% chance of having a match. But a very similar type is essential to ensure that the body does not reject the stem cells. The chances of any two unrelated individuals matching are between 1 in 100 to 1 in a million.
A bone marrow registry is set up in Mumbai at Parel’s Tata Memorial hospital but with only a few thousand donors registered currently. We need a voluntary donor pool of at least 1,00,000 donor registered and typed to enable a global search of donors of our (Indian) ethnic/racial type. The logic is simple, the more the number of registered donors, more are the chances of a patient finding a match and his life getting saved. It’s as good as giving life to someone who is dying.
How can you save life and become a Donor?
Healthy individuals between the age of 18 and 50 years are eligible to be stem cell donors. After you reach the location on 28th August, a blood sample will be collected from you. Your blood will be tested to determine your Human Leukocyte Antigen (tissue type) and details will be entered on a database. You will get a call with a similar tissue type needs a transplant.
Contrary to some myths, Stem cell transplant is a Simple process similar to blood platelets donation. You can resume normal activity immediately, Stem cells naturally replenish in a few weeks time.
Folks, Go all out, spread the awareness about Stem cell, about Marrow donor registration.
